Garmin GPS Handlebar Mount:

Review:

We wanted to do a review of a gadget that is for more than just a Sport ATV Application. A GPS is a must have for today's campers, hunters, and off-roaders.  It does not do you a lot of good if it is in your pocket. We looked at GPS manufacturers websites to see if they had a mounting solution and this is what we came up with. The Handlebar clamp for the Garmin GPS12. We also purchased one for a Garmin eTrex GPS and Garmin GPS Vas well.

We ordered and received our mounts from Garmin. Let's mount them and run a test. Mounting on the GPS 12 is pretty straight forward. There is a rubber strip that wraps around the handlebars and the mount is screwed together over the rubber strip. We did however find that on The Polaris Sportsman 500 the only good place to mount the bracket was on the left side and we did have to shave a few millimeters off the mount to get it between the handlebar and the Brake Reservoir. The mount could stand to be a little thinner in this area to compensate for mounting on all quads.

The Mounting tab that attaches to the GPS is held to the unit with double-sided adhesive tape. We made sure to thoroughly clean the back of our GPS Unit with alcohol and a clean towel before attaching the double-sided tape. After attaching the bracket we snapped our unit into the Handlebar mount. We do recommend that you tether your GPS to the handlebar with some twine just incase it pops out on the trail. This will keep you from running your expensive GPS over and ruining it.

Conclusion: We liked the concept of having your GPS in sight while riding. This will allow you to clock your speed and map (on some mapping GPS units) trails that you ride.  This makes it a lot easier to find your way back to camp. The mount is strong and grips the handlebars well. We could  only find one fault with the mount itself, the fact that we had to shave a few millimeters off the back of it to get it between the handlebar and the brake reservoir on our test ATV.
Product Pros:
  • Good solid base for mounting your GPS.
  • Fairly good price point. ($15.00 for our test unit)
Product Cons:
  • Had to shave the back of the GPS mount to get it to fit our ATV.

Overall Rating:

Highly Recommended
